Investigative Reporters & Editors points to a couple of investigations by newspapers not far from here... See the links at IRE's Extra! Extra!, and while you're there, look at some of the workshops and resources IRE offers:

Legislators double salaries with expense checks. Bonna de la Cruz of The (Nashville) Tennessean analyzed state data to find that "twenty-seven Midstate lawmakers double their salaries or better by collecting state expense checks whether they incur the expenses or not..."

State officials overspending, despite fiscal crisis. Louis Hansen and David Gulliver of The Virginian-Pilot obtained spending records from Virginia's Department of Game & Inland Fisheries showing that "officials regularly traveled to conventions, bought expensive sporting goods and routinely exceeded limits on their state-issued charge cards..."

Farther away, Dan Gillmor pointed out this Seattle Times investigation on a "Dot-Con Job" during the tech stock bubble of the late 1990s. The series of stories shows a serious investment by the paper -- in reporters' time, Freedom of Information Act challenges and legal fees. Check out the "about" page for details -- 100 interviews and 8,000 pages of documents!

Which reminds me to get back to "spring break" grading...
