A few years after buying my first 25-pound "portable" computer, I stumbled on a book titled Tools for Thought by Howard Rheingold, the story of innovators who figured out that computers could do more than crunch numbers. I had already managed to reorganize a 300-page master's thesis thanks to a larger computer and had discovered Usenet discussion groups, so I was ready for Howard's introduction to ideas like hypertext and computer-assisted collaboration.

Today, Tools for Thought was the heading on Howard's SmartMobs weblog, so I quickly followed it to Steven Johnson's piece in Sunday's New York Times (and related stuff in his blog) about new tools for writers, including something called  DEVONthink.

Meanwhile, Howard has also set a standard for sartorial excellence that should be food for thought here in Knoxville.
