Peggy Philip, news director for WMC-TV in Memphis, may be the nation's first weblogging television news director, according to Lost Remote, a weblog and e-mail list with the subtitle "Where TV Finds the Future."

Terry Heaton at Donata Communications interviewed Peggy for Lost Remote, and learned there are four other bloggers at WMC -- three photojournalists and a reporter. Here's a moment of insight into the two-way nature of the Web world when compared to the one-way world of broadcast news...

Q: What advice would you give to others in the local TV news business about starting a blog?

Be prepared for the likes of "peggyphillipblows.com." It no longer exists, but somebody went to the trouble to build a spoof website that looked just like mine where for a few days, I got trashed. I thought it was clever and sometimes funny. I don't mind professional criticism.

Closer to my new East Tennessee home, I see the Knoxville News Sentinel has its share of bloggers, at least for special occasions. So much to read, so little time! (Not to mention the whole Rocky Top Brigade.)

As might be expected,  Dan Gillmor, blogger and San Jose Mercury tech columnist, wrote his new book about the present and future of digital journalism by using the Internet to collect comments and suggestions from readers of his weblog.

Now that We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People is headed for bookstore shelves, Gillmor's very-wired publisher (O'Reilly) is providing both his weblog and a downloadable copy of the book for free.

(The dead-tree edition will be a lot more convenient for browsing in bed or at a coffee shop, so it's on my shopping list, too. Besides, buying a copy should buy Dan a cup of coffee, too.)

Meanwhile, Amazon's volunteer reviewers are already adding to the buzz about the book. And the pre-release blurb list is a veritable who's who of bloggers, online journalists and journalism-watchers. It would be interesting to see whether readers of the digital and paper editions have different opinions.
