We have compiled a "Fast Facts" information sheet about each of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill grant and fellowship programs administered by the Graduate School, plus similar sheets for more than a dozen of the most popular programs available through private and public agencies outside the University.

The Fast Facts are presented in check-lists to show which grants you are eligible for at each stage of your graduate education. Some grants are for entering or first-year students, others are only for dissertation research, and some have no restrictions.

The University financial aid office is also a valuable source of information about loans and need-based financial assistance, as well as employment on and off campus.

Available support varies by discipline and field of interest, so it's important to consult your advisor and your school or department. The University Office of Research Services maintains a GrantSource Library which you can visit in person or through the website linked at the right.

Frequently asked questions

Some of the Fast Facts sheets say "Students cannot apply for this award directly." What does that mean?

Evaluation for some grants is part of the University admission process. If you are one of your department's top applicants, the department's admissions committee can nominate you for a merit award or special-interest fellowship as well as a departmental graduate assistantship. Check the Fast Facts list and other information sources... think creatively... and if you have special interests or qualifications for a specific grant, point that out in your letter of application.

For example, someone in English, Music, Art or Information Science might have research interests or work experiences that make them as suitable for one of the Weiss Urban Livability Fellowships as a City Planning student, but the English, Music or Art department committee wouldn't know that unless you told them.
